Whether it’s a novel, movie, or TV series, many love a mystery. The highlight is the ending when all becomes clear and is “figured out”. Quilters love a mystery, too, especially a mystery quilt.
By definition, a mystery quilt is one with instructions that are revealed in a series of clues over some time (such as weeks or months), and the final design is unknown until the final clue is revealed.
The Start of the Mystery
Generally, fabric requirements, including quantity and specific coloring details (light, medium, or dark), are shared at the onset. Next comes cutting instructions, followed by the creation of the quilt blocks.
As the placement of the blocks and rows is revealed, the quilt top starts to come together. Lastly, borders, quilting instructions, and binding are shared, and the answer to the “mystery” becomes evident.
The creation of a mystery quilt can be fun and adventurous.
Over the years, RWYS Quilting Phx members have participated in a mystery quilt experience. What adds to the excitement is seeing how different each quilt top can look despite everyone using the same pattern instructions.
In 2023, a renewed interest in the creation of a mystery quilt was expressed. The experience is continuing in 2025.
